Aireon, NATS and NAV CANADA win CANSO Award of Excellence in ATM 2019

The Civil Air Navigation Services Organisation (CANSO) has announced that the winner of the inaugural CANSO Award of Excellence in ATM 2019 is Aireon, NATS and NAV CANADA for their joint project to deploy space-based ADS-B in the North Atlantic. NAV CANADA recently celebrated the successful launch of air traffic control services using Aireon’s space-based Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B). For the first time in the history of aviation, air traffic controllers can now receive complete, real-time air traffic position data of all ADS-B-equipped aircraft in airspace that was not previously covered by ground-based surveillance.

Canada – U.K. Venture is Watershed moment in Air Traffic Control

A joint venture between Canada’s air traffic control operator NavCanada and satellite company Iridium went live Tuesday with the first air traffic surveillance system capable of providing real-time global coverage. The Aireon system is now in trial use over the North Atlantic, where it is being used by NavCanada and U.K. air traffic control operator NATS. NATS and the air traffic control organizations in Italy, Ireland and Denmark are also investors in Aireon.
