A successful final Iridium® NEXT launch delivered the remaining 10 Aireon payloads to orbit

MCLEAN, Va. – January 11, 2019 – Aireon announced today a successful eighth and final launch and deployment of the Iridium NEXT satellite constellation hosting the Aireon space-based Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) payloads. At 7:31 AM PST (15:31 UTC) a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket lifted off from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California and placed the final 10 Iridium NEXT satellites into low earth orbit (LEO). Final Iridium NEXT Launch Could Set Stage for Aircraft-Tracking Milestone

If Iridium’s final tranche of next generation satellites reaches orbit as planned on Jan. 8, the launch will clear the way for its aviation partner, Aireon LLC, to begin an aircraft tracking demonstration over the North Atlantic Ocean. Aireon ALERT Now Open for Pre-Registration

Aviation Stakeholders can now pre-register for the free, global Aircraft Locating and Emergency Response Tracking (ALERT) service, operated by the Irish Aviation Authority (IAA)

Aireon ALERT will be the only free service providing global coverage and GPS location and real-time tracking data to assist rescue coordination centers in emergency situations. Through a 24/7 communications facility, operated by the IAA at its North Atlantic Communications Centre in Ballygirreen, County Clare, Ireland, Aireon ALERT will make it possible to precisely query the location and flight track of any ADS-B equipped aircraft flying in distress.
