It started as the pet project of a software developer who was also a pilot. Today, the company boasts a team of 110 employees in four countries, and helps some 15 million travelers per month, over 200 airlines and 15,000 other companies.
With new technologies, changing passenger expectations, and evolving operational approaches, the aviation industry is one that adapts quickly. A specific area of the aviation ecosystem that has notably transformed in recent years is flight tracking. With safety always at the top of the priority list for aviation leaders, it’s no surprise that flight tracking has become a pivotal part of the aviation ecosystem and contributes greatly to keeping both passengers and crew members safe.
In recent years, flight tracking has been modernized. Traditionally, flight tracking over oceans, deserts, and other remote regions required hardware to be installed on aircraft along with a datalink subscription. New modernized global flight tracking leverages space-based ADS-B, enhancing flight tracking capabilities and allowing for operators to meet recent GADSS recommendations.
Icelandair will integrate FlightAware’s Firehose data feed to enhance their existing operational tools with global flight tracking. The feed will deliver live aircraft position data from FlightAware’s terrestrial network of ADS-B receivers, as well as from Aireon’s space-based ADS-B network.
