Aireon’s space-based ADS-B is being deployed through ICAO’s CRV!
Great news! So, what is ICAO’s CRV? ICAO is the International Civil Aviation Organization and CRV is the Asia Pacific Common Regional Virtual Private Network. This network is a cross-border communications network for ICAO Member States to exchange flight plan information, voice transmissions and now, Aireon’s space-based ADS-B surveillance data.
Still not sure what that means? Think about the CRV as a “cloud” that allows the transfer of digital data without unique point-to-point, leased telecommunications lines. The main objective is to reduce costs related to the proliferation of point-to-point circuits, allowing new links and capabilities to be set up without any need to purchase additional hardware.
Now that you know about the CRV…what does Aireon’s space-based ADS-B have to do with it? Well, Aireon is now connected to the CRV which allows for the delivery of real-time, high-fidelity data to the Asia Pacific Air Navigation Service Providers (ANSPs) through the CRV. With this fusion, ANSPs in the Asia Pacific region can now:
- save costs, without needing multiple point-to-point connections,
- reduce procurement time and effort, now that each ANSP will require only an initial connection to the network,
- and ensure speed, latency and redundancy of data transmissions through service agreement.
This will help the Asia Pacific region overcome the challenges of inhospitable terrain for ground radar and lack of high-quality infrastructure. Aireon’s connection to the CRV explained below:
