NiuSky Pacific Limited (NSPL), the air navigation service provider of Papua New Guinea, has reaffirmed its commitment to safe and efficient airspace operations with the renewal of its contract with Aireon for its space-based automatic dependent surveillance-broadcast (ADS-B) data.
NSPL has been operational with Aireon data since 2020 across its 1.6 million square kilometers of its Port Moresby Flight Information Region (FIR). Before Aireon, visibility was somewhat limited due to the challenges with maintaining ground infrastructure across the country’s mountainous terrains and amid challenging weather conditions. With Aireon data, NSPL has access to real-time surveillance across Papua New Guinea, facilitating seamless navigation and surveillance services across the country, and within the region.
“The introduction of Aireon’s space-based ADS-B service has been extremely beneficial in terms of enhanced safety and service provision. The data is used extensively from ground to 60,000 ft in the support of our operations from facilitating the application of reduced separation standards throughout the entire FIR, to allowing Flight Service Officers to accurately monitor lower-level traffic in real time. Apart from the enhancements, the service really stacks up from a cost-benefit perspective alone in PNG,” said Graham Blythe, Acting Managing Director, NiuSky Pacific Ltd.
“NSPL was an early adopter of Aireon’s ADS-B data and has been a great case study in the operational use of this data for oceanic airspaces and over land where terrestrial systems aren’t reliable. I want to thank the NSPL team for their continued support of this ground-breaking technology,” said Peter Cabooter, Aireon Executive Vice President, Customer Affairs.
