AireonFLOW Boosts Air Traffic Safety at AFCON 2024

In February 2024, Côte d’Ivoire became the center of the football world, playing host to the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), the premier African football tournament. During the month-long event, thousands of spectators flocked to the West African nation.

For ASECNA, the Air Navigation Service Provider for Côte d’Ivoire and 17 other nations, this meant handling the complex and unique air traffic flows that a high-profile event like this brings, including an increase in international traffic, VIP flights, business aviation aircraft, and commercial air traffic. They needed a partner that could handle the flight tracking and flow data, and they turned to Aireon. Read more about how AireonFLOW was used in this situation in our latest case study.

Data that supports air navigation service providers moment by moment

Aireon’s powerful tools offer insights for ANSPs to identify, monitor, and analyze key contextual information across their airspace. Our data is:

Operational

Aireon’s ADS-B data allows for streamlined management of some of the most critical airspace routes and major flight thoroughfares.

Certified

Our positional data is independently verified and validated by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), with encryption and cyber-spoofing detection capabilities.

Proven

More than 40 countries manage their airspace with Aireon data.

Global

The world’s first space-based ADS-B data pioneer, Aireon can provide coverage worldwide, with insights into areas traditional ADS-B streams cannot.

Identify and proactively mitigate potential threats against global satellite navigation systems

Example of low Position Integrity Category (PIC) counts in 2024, indicating possible GNSS jamming or interference.
Aireon’s Safety Dashboard GPS Interference Metric

The GPS Interference metric – part of Aireon’s Safety Dashboard, a platform which provides powerful data insights for ANSPs to identify, monitor, and analyze key leading indicators of safety in their airspace – specifically targets the rising issue of deliberate interference with global satellite navigation systems.

Key features of the GPS Interference metric include:

Trending of Position Integrity Category (PIC) values, an industry standard for measuring interference and possible jamming.

Trending of Individual Position Check (IPC) values, an Aireon unique measure of possible spoofing through time difference of arrival (TDOA), only possible with Aireon’s global satellite network.

Heat maps of both PIC and IPC values matched with the underlying events detected by Aireon’s network.
