Aireon is proud to announce our annual Aireon Cares Volunteer Day! In celebration of National Volunteer Week in April, we’ll select an activity to give back to our local community. It’s also an opportunity for the entire Aireon team to come together out of the office to make a difference.
This year, in honor of Earth Day, we hosted a park clean-up at Bon Air Park in Arlington, VA. The Aireon team came together to plant trees and herbaceous plants, remove invasive species, and help clean the local stream.
By the end of the day, our team of 45 volunteers planted a whopping 1,000 small plants and more than 35 shrubs and trees!

“The goal with Aireon Cares Volunteer Day is to have a dedicated day each year for us to get out of the office together and complete an activity for the benefit of our local community. As an organization, we have a responsibility to give back to the community in which we operate, and we hope to achieve that through this initiative,” said Evan Grimsley, HR Coordinator and volunteer.
Aireon’s Role in Reducing Aviation’s Environmental Impact
As an aviation company, we are acutely aware of the industry’s environmental impact. The growth in global air travel has contributed significantly to rising CO2 emissions. Aviation alone accounts for around 2.5% of global CO2 emissions, which contributes around 4% to global warming.
Aircraft engines emit gases and particles such as sulfur oxides, nitrogen oxides, black carbon, and water vapor – all of which affect air quality and contribute to climate change. In addition, aircraft noise, especially near airports, can disrupt local communities, impact public health, and harm wildlife through habitat disruption, even contributing to ecosystem degradation.
At Aireon, we are not only committed to aviation safety and efficiency, but also environmental sustainability. Our real-time, global air traffic surveillance system plays a vital role in making aviation more efficient and environmentally responsible.
By enabling airlines and ANSPs to monitor aircraft in real time, Aireon helps reduce unnecessary fuel burn and emissions. Our system supports more direct routes and optimal flight paths, which leads to:
- Shorter flight times
- Less fuel consumption
- Fewer carbon emissions
- Improved airspace efficiency
Through events like Volunteer Day and with advancements in our technology, Aireon is taking steps toward a more sustainable future.
