April 4 marks an important day for Aireon, as it commemorates Aireon’s Operational Service Anniversary. In its 7 years in service, Aireon has revolutionized the aviation industry – going from a small start-up to a highly recognized and widely respected industry leader. “We started with an idea and a couple of PowerPoint slides, and we created a fully functional company that provides a safety-of-life service, globally,” said Don Thoma, Aireon Chief Executive Officer.
In the early days of Aireon, the team spent a significant amount of time educating the market on the new concept of space-based automatic dependent surveillance broadcast (ADS-B) and the safety-critical nature of the service.
Early support from major Air Navigation Service Providers (ANSP) and industry leaders, such as NAV CANADA, NATS, and Iridium, were critical to Aireon’s development as it provided both funding and industry credibility, helping validate the initial concept of space-based ADS-B. Their continued support of Aireon has helped expand global adoption and maintain trust across the aviation industry.

“From the beginning, our ANSP investors and industry partners have effectively been our best salespeople. They took the initial risk, adopted the technology, and proved its interoperability with existing infrastructure without requiring massive overhauls. To this day, they help bridge the gap between technical capability and operational reality,” said Vinny Capezzuto, Aireon Executive Vice President and Chief of Operations.
Even with reputable industry partners investing in the technology, there were doubts about Aireon’s new service. Many competitors created confusion in the marketplace, even going as far as to say that the ADS-B network would be insufficient. However, Aireon proved the critics wrong and delivered on its promises and now retains over 25 ANSP customers and over 30 commercial customers. “In the years following our initial operational milestone, we have made changes to the system, the payloads, and added extensions and new applications to serve the commercial market,” said Mike Garcia, Aireon Chief Innovation Scientist. “Being a part of a diverse and innovative team helped bring these concepts and innovations to life while leveraging the systems real-time, global coverage in ways that were previously limited to terrestrial-only networks.”
As Aireon progressed, the size of the team expanded, but many of the founding employees remain with the company today. “The biggest change in Aireon has been its growth. I have watched Aireon grow from day one, starting with employee number one, and it’s been amazing to watch the company evolve over time,” said Yalonda White, Aireon Facilities Manager.

But what remains unchanging is the company culture and the importance that the Aireon executive team places on keeping employees a priority. “Although we have grown immensely in the time that I have been here, our executives still put employees first, they value us, and this is still as great a place to work as it was 10 years ago,” says Xiaoyun Yang, Aireon Accounting Manager.
In an industry where information drives performance, Aireon is focusing on building the capabilities to meet tomorrow’s challenges. This new and exciting growth phase for the company means adding to the core team, particularly in sales and business development to support our ANSP and Commercial Data Services customers, and creating a product development capability. “We are now poised to achieve our vision to have Aireon data and solutions embedded into the fabric of the entire aviation community so as to inform vital data-driven decision-making processes across all aviation stakeholders,” says Thoma.
Some of the most important work in aviation happens far beyond the view of what passengers can see, enabled by technology orbiting high above Earth, such as Aireon’s space-based ADS-B. “Of all the aviation projects I’ve been involved in, the Aireon mission is by far the most rewarding. We are a vital link in the aviation value chain; I often describe our work as a ‘noble cause.’ Whether it’s supporting search and rescue, enhancing tactical air traffic control, or assisting the intelligence community, we are making a tangible difference and, ultimately, saving lives,” says Capezzuto.
At Aireon’s 7-year Operational Anniversary, more than 90 countries are using Aireon services for air traffic surveillance and air traffic management.
