Why is Aireon a gamechanger?

Aireon has created the very first, real-time, space-based, global air traffic surveillance service.

What does that mean?

It means we provide 100 percent global, real-time coverage of all Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) equipped aircraft.

But why? Isn’t there already global air traffic surveillance?

No. Can you believe that over 70% of the world’s airspace lacks real-time air traffic surveillance? Currently, air traffic surveillance systems are limited by distance restrictions and can be expensive to implement and maintain in remote locations, like the oceans, poles, deserts and jungles. Now that Aireon is operational, traffic surveillance gaps are now a thing of the past

We have placed receivers on the Iridium NEXT constellation, which consists of 66 Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites. The space-based receiver network relays signals from all ADS-B equipped aircraft to air traffic controllers worldwide, regardless of terrain, location or infrastructure.
