Naviair, the Danish Air Navigation Service Provider (ANSP), has been instrumental in the success of Aireon, both as an initial ANSP investor and as a safety-minded customer.
Naviair provides flight information and air traffic control services in Greenlandic airspace, uses Aireon’s space-based automatic dependent surveillance-broadcast (ADS-B) in three different use cases:
- Aireon’s air traffic surveillance data for situational awareness in Nuuk FIR
- Aireon Locate search and rescue resource for Denmark
- Air Traffic Surveillance data in Nuuk Terminal Maneuvering Area (TMA)
The adoption of Aireon data for air traffic surveillance and situational awareness in Greenland follows an announcement in 2025 around the establishment of a TMA around Nuuk International Airport. This infrastructure will allow the ANSP to more effectively manage traffic in and out of the airport and enable an easier hand-off between controllers in Nuuk Approach and operators at the airport’s Aerodrome Flight Information Service. Additionally, this upgrade is expected to lift capacity restrictions in Nuuk International Airport and enable safe and more efficient traffic handling, creating better conditions for passenger growth and future-proofing air traffic management in Nuuk.
