Azeraeronavigation (AZANS), the air navigation service provider of the Republic of Azerbaijan, manages a critical chunk of airspace between Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. In addition to being a high-traffic airspace, its diverse nature – with about half being overland and half above the Caspian Sea – meant AZANS needed to strengthen its robust ground network with some information from space.
In 2022, AZANS chose Aireon to provide space-based ADS-B data for air traffic surveillance across Azerbaijan’s airspace, providing complete coverage of the Baku Flight Information Region (FIR) at all altitudes, including 78,800 sq. km over the Caspian Sea and approximately 11,000 km of land routes.
After only one year, AZANS signed on for more Aireon products, deploying the company’s Aireon Locate search and rescue tool and the Aireon Safety Dashboard products to further boost AZANS’s safety objectives. Further, in collaboration with AZANS and Metron Aviation, Aireon also began providing AireonFLOW ATFM data for integration with Metron’s Horizon System.
Together, these solutions extend AZANS’ visibility beyond its airspace, improve traffic-flow prediction, and support safer, more efficient operations while reducing fuel consumption, costs, and pilot and ATC workload.
