Aireon and Spanish ANSP ENAIRE Sign Agreement to Evaluate Space-Based ADS-B

Agreement will begin concept of operations on safety, efficiency and environmental benefits of deploying Aireon in Spanish airspace

McLean, Virginia (March 30, 2017) – Aireon announced today that it has signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with Spanish Air Navigation Service Provider (ANSP) ENAIRE. Through this agreement, ENAIRE will begin investigating the safety, efficiency and environmental benefits of deploying space-based automatic dependent surveillance-broadcast (ADS-B) technology in its airspace. ENAIRE controls more than 2.2 million square kilometres of airspace including the Iberian Peninsula, minus Portugal, the North Atlantic, Western Mediterranean, Ceuta and Melilla, the Canary and Balearic archipelago. Through this airspace, ENAIRE manages approximately 2 million flights per year that include…

The satellite system that could avoid another MH370: Radical scheme to track aircraft wherever they are to be fully operational in 2018

A fleet of 66 satellites carrying airplane-tracking technology could soon keep tabs on the position, speed, and altitude of aircraft all around the world. Iridium launched the first ten satellites in January, and so far, two have been switched on and begun to send back data. It comes three years after the mysterious disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, and experts say the new system could ensure that flights no longer go unaccounted for. Read Full Article

Soon we’ll actually know where planes are as they fly over the ocean

In January, Iridium launched the first ten of 66 satellites that will, for the first time, be able to continuously track airplanes’ position, speed, and altitude across the entire globe. Although the network won’t be operational until the end of 2018 at the earliest, two of the satellites have already been switched on, and they started to send back data a few weeks ago. “When we activated, we started collecting targets of opportunity. These are just any aircraft flying,” says Vinny Capezzuto, CTO of Aireon, which is the company that…

Aireon and Thales Begin Validation of Space-Based ADS-B Data

Thales will integrate AireonSM data with TopSky-ATC to advance space-based ADS-B deployment

Madrid, Spain (March 6, 2017) – Aireon announced today that Thales has officially begun the testing and validation of the Aireon space-based Automatic Dependent Surveillance – Broadcast (ADS-B) data.  Initially signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in June of 2015, the start of data validation marks a major milestone for Aireon and Thales‘ efforts to ensure the successful integration of space-based ADS-B into the TopSky–ATC automation platform.  The MOU was also designed to pave the way for Aireon data to be efficiently and effectively distributed to TopSky-ATC end-users. With the Aireon system…
