uAvionix Press Release: uAvionix Launches tailBeaconX Transponder for General Aviation and Urban Air Mobility

uAvionix today introduced a new ADS-B transponder to its General Aviation (GA) and Urban Air Mobility (UAM) lineup. tailBeaconX, the new Mode S Extended Squitter (ES) ADS-B OUT transponder is intended to address global air traffic surveillance system requirements for current and future ADS-B mandates. Integration with the uAvionix AV-20-E and AV-30-E Electronic Flight Instrument Systems (EFIS) introduces transponder control into the popular multi-function displays. Think outside the airframe. Following the successful skyBeacon and tailBeacon formula, tailBeaconX’s installation takes advantage of the existing aircraft lighting locations for mounting and access…

North Atlantic space-based ADS-B trial reaches next milestone

The transformation of air traffic services over the North Atlantic has taken another step forward this month with the trial introduction of new reduced lateral aircraft separations. The minimum distance between aircraft ‘wing tip to wing tip’ has been reduced from 23 to 19 nautical miles (nm), enabling greater flexibility in how available airspace capacity is used. It follows the reduction in the minimum safe ‘nose to tail’ separation between aircraft from 40nm to 14nm in March and represents another step towards the end of the traditional system of rigid…

Leonardo Signs MOU with Aireon to integrate space-based ADS-B data into its suite of automation products

Leonardo will integrate data from Aireon into its ‘LeadInSky’ ATM solution, facilitating the deployment of space-based ADS–B data

ROME, ITALY – September 10, 2018 – Leonardo has announced that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Aireon LLC, developer of the world’s first space-based air traffic surveillance system. The MOU will allow Leonardo, which provides advanced Air Traffic Management (ATM) solutions for Air Navigation Service Providers (ANSPs), to integrate space-based Automatic Dependent Broadcast (ADS-B) data into its ‘LeadInSky’ ATM system. LeadInSky is Leonardo’s latest-generation Air Traffic Management (ATM) automation platform. It offers safer and more secure air traffic control via multi-level redundancies and disaster-recovery capabilities. This…

How airliners are guided across a vast area of the Atlantic that’s out of radar range

Nats said: ‘In radar airspace there is either a five nautical mile or three nautical mile minimum separation laterally between aircraft, however, over the North Atlantic it is 60nm laterally and for aircraft following on the same route it is based on time – essentially 10 minutes apart. For aircraft crossing another aircraft at the same level it is increased further to 15 minutes.’ And aircraft are given fixed speeds to make sure they don’t catch up with the plane in front. The tracks are set up after requests for…
