Satellite Tracking Lets Plane Catch a Ride on the Jet Stream

New satellite networks mean planes can be constantly monitored in the sky

Flights between London and New York should coast on the jet stream to cut journey times and emissions, a study has suggested. Academics at the University of Reading argued that cutting-edge satellite data will allow each plane to prioritise the fastest route to cut carbon emissions and journey times.

Analysis of 35,000 transatlantic flights taken between December 2019 and February 2020 found that they could have used up to 16 percent less fuel if they had made a better use of the air currents and cut journey times by eight to nine minutes on average.
